Dr Becky Inkster kindly invited Katya Veleva to participate in her Digital Innovation in Mental Health virtual conference. Katya uses her perspective as an ex-construction design professional and coach to discuss issues around gender neutral public bathrooms. She describes public bathrooms as a 'ground zero' for various kinds of discrimination and segregation across history. She discusses demographics, definitions, debunks myths about what it means to have gender neutral bathrooms and gives a look at the daily reality of this discussion in the UK. She discusses definitions of gender identity, gender expression and biological sex within context. She discusses legislation and issues of safety and mental health and wellbeing. She discusses statistics, for example, that 62% of trans and gender non-conforming persons have experienced various types of harassment and abuse in public bathrooms, 48% say they live in fear of using public bathrooms.
